Celebration of International Literacy Day in Mozambique
This year, the Week and International Literacy Day will be celebrated under the theme "Literacy and Skills Development". The celebrations provide an opportunity to reflect on what skills development means in their contribution to reducing the high levels of illiteracy, the access to literacy programmes, literacy and adult education retention rates, as well as reflect on the results achieved in the area of Literacy and Adult Education, challenges and prospects for the future, in the light of the 2030 Education Agenda.
The core ceremony will take place in Cabo Delgado Province, Namuno District and will be chaired by the Minister of Education and Human Development. This ceremony will be preceded by the launch of the Week on September 1 in Maputo City and a Reflection Meeting on the role of literacy in skills development that will be held in Pemba City on 6 September. Specific objectives include: 1. Reflect on the role of literacy and Adult Education in Skills Development; 2. Advocate, inform and mobilize different stakeholders in the promotion of Youth and Adult Education activities; 3. Express recognition of the efforts made by literacy teachers and educators, civil society organizations and community leaders to contribute to the increase of literacy rate of the country.
